Formaldehyde in diapers? All brands that still contain it
According to a new survey of 32 brands and models of diapers, there has been a slight improvement in the quality of these products, but there is still one outstanding point: the presence of formaldehyde.
The DGCCRF survey
The Directorate-General for Competition and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF), following the investigation carried out by the ANSES (National Agency for Food, Environmental and Professional Health and Safety), wanted to constantly monitor the various diaper manufacturers over the last year and especially whether they had made improvements to their products, after the scandal involving them in terms of their safety. In fact, 32 brands and models of diapers for babies, representative of the French national market, but some of which are also sold in our country, have been sampled.
The results
The survey conducted between 2019 and 2020 showed not only an improvement in the quality of diapers themselves but also that the health and safety limits for the various substances have never been exceeded. But that is not all. It also showed that there are neither allergens nor pesticide residues and that there is a reduction in contamination by dioxin and furan, PCB-DL (chlorine compounds) and HAP3, which are still detected, but still within the permitted thresholds.
Despite everything, the Directorate-General for Competition and Fraud Prevention is still very concerned about the enormous presence of formaldehyde, the traces of which have been found in as many as 24 out of 32 diapers. This is a potentially dangerous substance. Its toxic characteristics require particular care when handling it and, in the event of contact, precise precautions must be taken depending on whether it is skin contact, accidental inhalation, accidental ingestion or accidental spraying on the eyes.
Worst brands
There are several brands of baby diapers where the measured formaldehyde content exceeds 10% of the permitted health threshold. In this case these are:
Pampers Premium Protection;
Baby Dry;
Harmonie;
Lupilu of Lidl;
Huggies Little Swimmers;
Huggies Pull-Ups;
Carryboo;
Love & Green;
Marmailles Plus;
Moina Zaza.
Knowing that diapers are used on toddlers, further improving their quality and safety is important. We hope, therefore, that the next test will show the total absence of formaldehyde.
