Newborn sheets: what to choose, sizes and fabrics.

Newborn sheets: fabrics and sizes

Newborn sheets: essential in the newborn kit

Sheets are among the indispensable things in the newborn bedding list, in fact even before carrying the pregnancy to term it is necessary to have at least two coordinated sets of sheets.

The new born baby usually for the first months of life can sleep comfortably in the pram, he will spend most of his time in there, so unless you decide to start immediately to move him in the cot at night, just the sheets for the cot will be enough.

By around 3/4 months, the baby will be old enough to think about moving him to the cot, at which point the sheets used up until now will no longer fit and you will have to use the sheets for the cot.

For those who are becoming mothers for the first time or for those who do not have children and want to give the sheets for the birth of the newborn is always a bit of effort to understand the measures and materials suitable for the newborn.

Let's take a closer look at the materials and sizes of newborn sheets.

Fabrics for newborn sheets.

If in the choice of fabrics for our double beds we have the variety of flannel in winter, silk in spring or linen in summer; for newborns there is no doubt 100% cotton all year round.

There are many reasons for this strict selection, the skin of the newborn is very delicate and must be preserved as much as possible. Assuming that the baby spends most of his time in contact with the sheets, they must be soft, delicate, breathable and treated as little as possible.

The characteristics that we need to look at for newborn sheets:

  • Smooth: sheets should not have embroidery, prints or applied potentially dangerous objects such as buttons, zippers or metal buckles.
  • Soft colours: pay great attention to the dyes present in the fabric that could be aggressive on the skin, that's why you should always choose fabrics with soft colours or better still white.
  • Cotton: cotton ensures breathability and lightness, which are essential for the safety of the baby.
  • Made in Italy: the certainty of safe fabrics for your newborn baby is guaranteed by a Made in Italy brand, as Italian production guarantees compliance with standards and laws on fabric safety.
  • Breathable: in addition to protecting the skin from irritation and redness, the characteristic of breathability is necessary to avoid SIDS (cot death), unfortunately sometimes due to suffocation with sheets that are too heavy.

Measures newborn sheets

Each mattress has its own measurements and it is important not to make mistakes so that the sheets are well pulled so that they do not hinder the movements of the newborn baby. Usually the sheets are found in coordinated sets consisting of:

  1. Mattress cover with elastics;
  2. Rectangular sheet;
  3. Pillowcase.

SHEETS PRAM AND COT:

As mentioned before many new parents for the first few months use the pram during the night, this is because the baby is still very small and inside the carrycot will be well protected, also the canopy will shelter him from the light and possible drafts of wind.

As an alternative to the pram, you can often use the bassinet, which is slightly larger than the pram.

The sheets of the pram have as measures 80X110 while the sheets of the cot measure 90x120, for this reason it is often much more convenient to buy directly the sheets for cot, as the minimum difference would not interfere much and especially because the new generation of prams are equipped with thicker mattresses and comfortable need a few cm of fabric more than the standard models.

Cribs are making a comeback, especially those made of wicker, delicate and pretty, but often the mattresses inside have different shapes than standard mattresses; they can be round, oval or rectangular and for this reason it is often recommended to buy the sheet for the mattress without corners.

COT SHEETS:

The cot, on the other hand, can be used right away if it has a bumper, but it is often used when the baby is a little older. The measurements of the cot sheets are 120 x 180 cm.

Remember that it is always good to use cotton which, with its dual function, retains heat and provides warmth in the coldest periods, while in hot weather it becomes cool and light. Its breathability leaves the skin and space always dry and, being hypoallergenic, does not create redness or irritation on the delicate skin of the child.

During the colder months it is sufficient to add blankets, although it is always better not to cover the baby excessively, but rather to try to keep the house warm and dehumidified and help keep him or her warm with heavy pyjamas, as during the night he or she will often tend to move around and uncover themselves.

NEXTTOME SHEETS:

The NextToMe cot is a Chicco invention that promotes cosleeping without any risk, in fact this small cot attaches to the double bed and allows you to sleep close to your baby without being in the same bed. These cradles have different measures from the standard ones and they need NextToMe compatible sheet set which have as measures of the sheet 135 x 98 cm, the measures of the under with corners 83 x 52 cm and the measures of the pillowcase 34 x 25 cm.
