Newborn sweating:how it occurs, causes and remedies.

newborn sudamine

With the arrival of summer and rising temperatures we all suffer more from the heat, even babies. Even newborns sweat, and if the temperatures are too high you may notice some red bubbles on the baby's body; don't worry, it's newborn sudamine, the sweat dermatitis that newborns often suffer from.

Newborn sudamine: what is it?

Newborn sudamine, also called miliaria, is an inflammatory skin condition that manifests as small red dots on the infant's skin that cause discomfort and itching or very small whitish blisters. The infant may get nervous, cry and be jumpy because of the heat and itching that sudamine causes; the important thing for the parent to do is not to be alarmed; sudamine is very common in infants and is easily resolved in a few days.

The red dots of sudamine usually occur in specific parts of the body such as the neck, chest, armpits, inner thigh, or otherwise in the parts where sweating and rubbing is greatest. Infant sweating arises because the skin cannot "breathe" as it should, so it retains sweat and manifests itself through skin irritation.

Usually this inflammation is usual in infants and children up to 4 years old, but it can also appear on adults.

Causes of newborn sweating

Sudamine usually occurs because the skin does not have a chance to breathe well or due to excessive sweating; it mostly happens to infants since their skin pores are smaller and the risk of obstruction is higher. In fact, sweating in newborns can be caused by:

  • too heavy or synthetic clothing;
  • high fever;
  • predisposition to excessive sweating;
  • use of medications.

To prevent sudamine blisters from developing on the infant's skin, it is always recommended to use light, breathable newborn clothing in fabrics such as cotton or linen. In summer especially, it is recommended to keep infants only in sleeveless cotton bodysuits when indoors and in cotton or linen rompers when out for a walk.

Types of newborn sweats

Newborn baby sudamine can be distinguished and into crystalline, ruby and deep. Let's see what they look like:

Crystalline sudamine has very small whitish blisters on non-reddened skin and usually appears in the infant's first few months;

Sudamine rubra, on the other hand, also called red, occurs after several weeks and presents with punctiform blisters, the skin is rough to the touch and is reddened in fact it is a real inflammation that causes itching and discomfort.

If we find bus inside the small blisters, surely a bacterial infection will also be in progress.

Finally, deep sudamina, the most severe form of sudamine, consists of skin lesions characterized by sharp edges , about one cm in size that causes pain and burning.

Although concern may be high seeing these inflammatory states on an infant's skin is nothing to worry about, just have him or her examined by the pediatrician to ascertain that it is sudamina and implement some remedies according to the severity of the infant's skin.

Newborn baby sweating remedies

The most frequently used remedies in case of sudamina in a mild form on the newborn are simple tricks to have in the daily routine: take daily baths in lukewarm water with cornstarch (it can be found both in flakes and powdered form) every day, dry him well after the bath, leave him as long as possible without clothes ( possibly even without a diaper) and use talcum powder suitable for the baby's skin to control inflammation and give freshness on the skin.

In case the sudamine is red, corticosteroid cream is used, and in the worst case scenario if the blisters become inflamed and a pustular sudamine forms with bacterial infection (usually staphylococcus) the area will have to be treated with antibiotic cream.

Instead, zinc oxide creams or natural emollients such as calendula can be used to reduce itching and inflammation.
